Building a CMMI Data Infrastructure
February 6-7, 2017 Gregory (Greg) S. Rohrer W.W. Mullins Professor and Head, Department of Materials Science and Engineering Carnegie Mellon University Research Interests: • Mesoscale structure of polycrystals and its relationship to the properties of materials, • Interface energy and its relationship to microstructure evolution • Microscopic probes of local properties of materials. • Photochemistry on metal oxides and solar water-splitting Data I could contribute: 3D Microstructure Data Grain Boundary Properties Major challenges to building a shared CMMI Data Repository: • Committing the time and effort both for recording the appropriate meta data and archiving the data so that it can be easily accessed. • Providing incentives • Change in culture regarding data ownership What I would like to take away from the workshop: (1) An understanding of the best practices for capturing and sharing data (2) Develop connections (maybe even collaborations) with others in the materials data community.
