1 Testing the DEM tool: the Dutch experience
Onno van de Velde Centre for Water Management Brussels, May 2009

2 Reporting by the Netherlands
No reporting on location & boundaries of sensitive areas (application of Article 5.8) Information on annual N & P influent and effluent loads of all UWWTPs needed (application of Article 5.4) Reporting on the percentage of reduction of the annual overall N & P load entering all UWWTPs (application of Article 5.4) Reporting on compliance with the BOD5 and COD discharge requirements for all agglomerations of 2 000 p.e. or more (Article 4) Reporting on compliance with the requirements for collecting systems 11-12 May 2009

3 Problems? Download and installation of the DEM tool: no problem
Data import: option b); txt files obtained from reported UWWTD Excel worksheets (reference year 2005) problems with - Contact data - Receiving area data - agglomerations data - Discharge points data - Industry data Data export: problems with receiving areas data 11-12 May 2009

4 Data Import Summary 11-12 May 2009

5 Import problems Why error messages on the name of the two contact persons? Import of data on receiving areas from correct txt file failed: Acceptance of ‘application of Articles 5(8) and 5(4)’ Field ‘Start date of application of Art 5(4)’ reads in the date of application of Art 5(8) Subsequently field ’Start date of application of Art 5(4)’ does not read in the date of application of Art 5(4) (‘No designation criteria specified’) Why so many lines in a log, while the ID field of a discharge point is filled in automatically? Does empty txt file for Industry (optional) create standard MS-Access error message? 11-12 May 2009

6 e) Status of agglomerations
Strange character between ‘UWWTP’ and its name in stead of a space Edit/insert the big city discharger: after inserting & saving a new item clicking on button ‘back’ results in message of unsaved items! leaving the template is not allowed 11-12 May 2009

7 Data Export Summary Export of data on receiving areas failed because of the respective import problem (‘No designation criteria specified’) 11-12 May 2009

8 Recommendations Data import:
Option b) ‘Excel sheets saved in csv format’ should be maintained To prevent errors: abandon separation in thousands Solve the problems with - Contact data: error messages - Receiving area data: error messages related to Art. 5(8)&5(4) - agglomerations data: strange character in list of UWWTPs - Edit/insert big city discharger: message of unsaved items - Discharge points data: many redundant lines in log - Industry data: error message because of empty txt file Data export: Solve the problem with 11-12 May 2009
