3. It’s all about WORD CHOICE!
When you’re talking to someone in person, you can tell how they feel about the subject matter they are discussing by: tone of voice, inflection, facial expressions, gestures, etc.
But how can you tell the author’s feeling just by reading what they wrote when you can’t see or hear him or her?
It’s all about WORD CHOICE!

5. Let’s try it!
Picture the character pacing back and forth up and down the street for an hour- this shows her frustration more than the word choice “standing on” the street.

Dad is using informal language with Amber- just like if they were talking in person. This is not a formal letter he would leave for the President!

Shannon is anxious for the mail to come! She is anticipating receiving some important news. She can’t wait!

7. A
This is a formal letter that was probably sent to many different people to politely explain the Special Olympics fund drive. It is simply giving information and requesting support.
