O Horizon This is the top layer, the “organic” layer which is made up of mostly dead plant matter (humus).

Topsoil or A Horizon Below the O horizon is the layer called “topsoil” or A Horizon. It has lots of organic matter (humus) and is usually dark in color.

B Horizon Subsoil Layer. Not much organic matter. A lot of mineral leaching has taken place. Sometimes the transition between topsoil and subsoil is very sharp and sometimes they fade into each other.

C Horizon This layer has lots of large rocks mixed in with soil deep underground. Partially weathered rocks with little or no living things.

Bedrock Horizon R This is the parent rock that lies beneath the soil. In some places this can be quite near the surface and in others it is very, very deep.
