Brief Breakdown Case Managers filter out the “Work Ready” Clients from TANF Case load. Special Projects Coordinator invites Clients, Mentors, Motivational Speakers, Resume Prep and many others to Bi-Annual “GILA” “GILA” is held for 3.5 days. Every May and October.
5
Who gets to Attend? Who can come to GILA?
An approved ASAP client who is determined to be work ready by their ASAP case manager. How many times can a client go to GILA? An ASAP client cannot attend GILA more than 3 times. How many times can a client work under Subsidized Employment? Since Subsidized Employment is twice a year (summer and winter) a client can only work under subsidized employment once per year.

GILA! GILA means “Lets GO!” in the Athabascan Language.

Other Options beside Subsidized Employment.
Education – Client will need to provide class schedule, quarterly grades and continued follow up with case manager. This must be on their FSSP plan. Counseling / Treatment – Client must have an assessment and follow through with assessment - When a client comes on board and already has a plan in place to start/continue school (being under 6 months to completion, unless the TAN/TAA is exempt from work activities) and means to carry it out with supporting documentation, than it is in the best interest of our client to continue path of education because this will ultimately benefit our client in achieving self-sufficiency. - When a client has certain barriers to employment, whether it be substance abuse, depression, PTSD,…tackling this issue first will ultimately benefit the client, keeping in mind once they have received the help they need, they can then be introduced to subsidized employment.

Job Mentors Job Mentors are there to assist clients in finding employment, to advocate, to bring out clients strengths, to help them overcome weaknesses and help the client use that to full advantage. They’re there to diffuse stressful situations with the client before it becomes a large barrier, they also work alongside ASAP Case Managers to help clients achieve self-sufficiency. The Job Mentor stays with the client from start to finish during their 6 months of Employment.

Finding a Job Throughout the years TCC Subsidized Employment has worked with multiple businesses around Fairbanks and with Tribal Councils in the Villages. We have had success and failures, some we still work with today and others just once. With those successes and failures we came up with a “Potential Employer” list that we give to clients at “GILA” The popularity of this program has caught air in the greater Fairbanks area and beyond; we get calls to the office from interested businesses and add them to the list.
16
Job Selection The client gets to choose where they want to work.
The Employer gets to interview and decide if the client is a good fit for their company. When a placement is established the employment can last up to 6 months. When 6 months is up, employers have the option to keep the client on their own payroll.
17
Keeping the Job TCC ASAP Staff, Tribal Work Force Development Specialists (TWDS) and Job Mentors work hard for the Clients to have full success during their work experience. Shall they need anything, we are there to help.
