Aztec Leader Moctezuma, the leader of the Aztec people, was known as the Great Speaker One of his many responsibilities was to watch the night sky for signs that might tell of future events and interpret these for his people His decisions were influenced by the movement of heavenly bodies Lately there had been some bad omens – such as the lake water turning red as blood Moctezuma saw a “star serpent” one night – this was a terrible omen, foretelling death and destruction

It was generally determined by which class he or she was born into However, people were able to work their way to a higher level through their own efforts

The Role of THE Emperor The Aztec Emperor was treated as if he were a god The Aztecs showed respect by obeying him without question and by giving the emperor every possible privilege and luxury The emperor’s responsibilities were chief priest, commander in chief, and head of state What are the roles of the commander of the army and the head of state?

FAMILY CLANS Aztec society was organized into units called calpolli
Members of a calpolli lived in the same neighbourhood and worshipped at the same temple Calpolli were often organized into what type of work they did (ex. merchant, farmers, etc)

Moving up in Society The main way to move up in Aztec society was by achieving success on the battlefield A warrior who took four enemies prisoner immediately became eligible for membership in a higher social status

Aztec Education Aztec children were educated at home until they started school, they didn’t start school until they were ! Codices tell us that all classes in Aztec society pampered their children until the age of 3. After that they were expected to be hard working and obedient. Education was valued in Aztec society; all schooling was free and every child went to school. There were two types of schools; the calmecac for nobles and the telpochcalli for commoners What does this say about Aztec worldview? Are all people created equal?

Reading, writing and counting
Aztecs based all their higher education on the ability to read and write using a system of pictures, called Glyphs Only nobles learned how to read and write

Military Training All boys trained as warriors to defend the Aztec state Once he knew how to fight, a boy would serve as a soldier’s servant and follow the army to learn how warriors conducted themselves in battle At age 15, boys became warriors What does mandatory military training say about Aztecs belief about responsibility to other?

Educating Aztec Women Unlike many other societies, the Aztecs thought it was important for girls to get a good education Every young girl regardless of her social rank attended school At age 16, most Aztec girls got married

Laws and Lawmaking The Aztec people had their rights protected by a system of written laws What concept of worldview does this relate to? Slaves also had their rights protected, Aztecs realized their value in society If slaves sold at the marketplace could escape and run to the emperor’s palace – a distance of about one and a half kilometers - they would immediately win their freedom
