1
The five types of language
2
The Language of information.
Today’s Heading The Language of information. (turning you from poetry critics to journalists)
3
The objective of this class is:
To introduce the language of information To increase your ability to ask questions. To examine articles, explanations and interviews.
4
New topic, new rules: In poetry we should all express our feelings and what we think. In this topic today however we’re looking for something different.
5
We want facts, numbers and details.
Language is to be formal, simple and clear. Be objective, impartial, neither for or against what you are examining. Remember the journalists checklist: Who? What? Where? When? How? Why? Use the five senses to make this interesting.
6
(the latter of which I can hopefully show now)
Be inspired by: Newspapers T.V. And radio news Internet new sites. (the latter of which I can hopefully show now)
7
Paper 1, Section 2: Composing
Write an article on... T.V., life as a teenager, your school, a famous person or something else you are probably already interested in. You’re purpose here is to convey information.
8
Activity one - What questions can I ask?
You meet you favourite celebrity and you have to learn every single fact about their life – what do you ask them? (Remember the journalist checklist).
9
Write an article Write an article (One A4 page) about someone.
The facts do not have to be correct but they do have to be believable and make sense. The structure is simply: One idea per paragraph (very short paragraphs, almost bullet points)
10
Now... One of two things is about to happen which involve the class participating in ‘Peer Correction’. Would the class rather stand up, move to a new seat and read whoever’s work is there. Or Would the class like to hand up the work and it shall be randomly distributed.
11
Other than articles We have interviews.
We have explanations to younger or foreign people.
12
Explanations You are responsible for a new first year from Gallifrey. What knowledge can you impart about how to deal with this school?
13
Interviews Pair-up - one person shall be the interviewer and the other a well known celebrity. Together, write down three interesting questions and answers, to be said aloud to the class then.
14
Homework Choose a novel, play, movie or television show and summarise it in one A4 page. Provide facts, numbers and details. Use quotes. Give me information.
