SAFE FAIR FUN Being a Referee Means…
YOU ARE IN CHARGE – the players, coaches and fans are not. YOU are the BOSS. As the referee – it is your job to make sure the match is: SAFE FAIR FUN First and foremost, you are going to be in a position of authority. Nobody, not player, not coaches, and certainly not fans are in charge, YOU are. You need to wrap your mind around this and learn what it takes for you to be comfortable with this reality. You must adapt and learn not to let it bother you one way or the other, just do your job as referee. Second, numbers tracked over the last few years tell us that nearly half of you may become an statistic of attrition if you’re not properly mentally prepared. To help you avoid the Second, we want to give you some knowledge to cope with stress. Help you to know what to expect. Give you some suggested skills to deal with situations, and Help you to anticipate, plan for and manage conflict.

Have the respect of the players (coaches and fans) and the game Understand that most of the time many of the players (coaches and fans) do not agree with you. TIP 1 - Things MUST do (Referee Duties) Tip 2 – Things you SHOULD do (Referee Powers) Tip 3 – How you look and act (at ALL times) 3 things you have to do to do your job as a referee well. There are things you must do (referee duties), things you should do (referee duties) and how you should act (and look) when you want the players and otheres to respect you.

Body Language – you are judged by the way you Walk Talk Make Eye contact, and Act.

How does someone walk when they are: Shy or scared When they don’t care When they are arrogant When they are confident How should you walk towards the coaches?

Think about HOW people talk to you if they are: Scared Disrespectful Confident How should you address a coach or another ref?

Do you Look someone right in their eyes? Look down at the ground? Look at something or someone behind the person you are addressing?

Appearance – How do I look to coaches and players? Posture – What does the way I stand tell others? Walk – What does my walk say? Eyes – Am I looking them straight in the eyes? Speech – Confidence or scared? Handshake – firm, but not too hard

Be on time, in proper uniform Show respect for fellow officials, players, coaches and spectators Be calm and confident Take each game seriously, and HAVE FUN !
