2 2018 is seeing rapid movement to remote control and autonomous ships
2018 is seeing rapid movement to remote control and autonomous ships. Pilot projects are being planned in Europe and Asia; demonstrations of technology are on-going worldwide, and, the International Maritime Organization has begun a regulatory scoping exercise. These initiatives will eventually affect Canadian mariners and Canadian waters.

3 Pilot Projects are planned and in some cases already under way in Europe and Asia.
IMO Adds Autonomous Ships to its Agenda and had started a Scoping Exercise on the necessary Regulatory changes that will be required .

4 Following a proposal by a number of countries to include autonomous ships on its agenda, the IMO Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) will start to establish a new international legal framework for the safe operation of these vessels. The Proposal submitted by Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, United Kingdom, and the US.
