nonfunctional as the effete aristocracy that embraced it.”

Light, elaborate, decorative style.
Centered in France & associated with Louis XV. Pastels, non-serious subject matter. A backlash to the darkness of the Baroque --> less formal & grandiose. Often portrays the lifestyle of the nobility. “Fete galante” Eventually replaced by Neo-Classicism, the artistic style of the American & French Revolutions.
