3rd Grade ELA News Weeks of November 28th – December 2nd Spelling Words: miss started pardon idea stars lunar poor carpet cycle copy market appearance floor party octagon appearance *Test on Friday, Dec. 2. Grammar: Simile & Metaphor *Test on Friday, Writing: Researching Christmas in a country. Reading/Language/Spelling Main Selection: During the next three weeks we will be reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. We will also be researching Christmas around the world. Comprehension: We will be working on predictions for this story this week. *Comprehension checks will be made periodically during the week. Fluency: We will focus on Rate this week. *I will take a G1 fluency grade every Friday. Target Vocabulary: *Test on Friday, Dec. 2. Ironmongery: A hardware store or business that makes iron goods. Simile: A figure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with another thing of a different kind. Emphatically: Without doubt or clearly stated in a forceful way. Covetous: Showing a great desire to posses something that belongs to someone else. Muttered: To say something in lower or barely audible voice. Liberality: The quality of giving or spending freely. Melancholy: A feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause. Jocund: Cheerful or lighthearted. Reminders *Check and sign your child’s homework folder each night. *Practice fluency each night for 1 minute, three times. *Poem (sent home in folder last week) will be recited before the class on November 30. Please practice with your child. Extra time will not be given. If you have misplaced the poem, you can find a copy on our website under “poems.”
