Do Not Grow Weary In Doing Good
1. Do not grow weary---grow stronger! A. in Thessalonica 1 Th. 4:11; 2 Th. 3:10, 14 B. today 2 Tim 3:16; Gal. 6:7; Is. 40:29-31 He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

toward those who are inside (like God) A. when we assemble Heb. 10:19, 22, 24 B. church’s duty to note 2 Thess. 3:14; Is. 59:1-2; Ps. 119:104 C. genuine individual concern Phil. 2:1-5 - in physical things Matt. 7:12 - in spiritual things Mt. 18:15; 1 Cor. 5:11 III. We must not grow weary in doing good toward those who are inside, imitating God A. When we assemble 1. Every assembly has a dual-purpose Heb. 10 v19, 22 there is no earthly temple for Xians, but we can enter the Holiest, draw near to God (worship) v24 stir up love and good works in each other (of course, we’re glad to have guests but they are not focus) 2. Do not grow weary in your presence and participation in drawing near to God and stirring others up a. the more you “put into” leading (preparation, thought, personal ability, heart), the more there is available for people who want to get something out of what we are doing. b. no worshiper is dependent completely on the leader to be stirred up or to stir others up i. stir up those who lead prayer by verbally saying amen after prayer! ii. can you be stirred up when you have “heard that lesson before”? 2 Pet. 1:13 Peter believed so iii. heart-felt singing isn’t always loud, soft, or on-tune—be stirred by message and sincerity of others iv. when the Lord’s death is proclaimed, how can I be thoughtless and emotionless? v. no matter how many or few pennies I can give, giving reminds us that we are blessed (Acts 20:35). 3. When I view worship as entering the Holiest to draw near to God with His people, I will not grow weary. B. Church’s duty to note 2 Thess. 3:14 1. God, the expert on matters of good and grace, always responds to sin Is. 59:1-2 (sin causes separation) 2. We must respond to sin a. Though among the most emotionally unpleasant, sometimes complex, and sometimes lengthy duties, notice the similarity in God’s response and our response (2 Thess. 3:14 and Is. 59:2) b. ongoing sin must be publicly identified, so its influence is stopped 1 Cor. 5:6 c. we learn from God to respond to sin, not ignore it Ps. 119:104 C. Genuine, individual concern Phil. 2:1-5 we are learning to think like Jesus when we apply this-- 1. in physical things a. several passages list various ways this is done but are not given as a weekly or “once in a lifetime” checklists (Matt. 25:31-46; Rom. 12:3-16; 1 Cor. 12; 1 Tim. 5:10; 1 Pet. 4:8ff) b. Mt. 7:12 helps us to know “what to do” by the difficult task of putting yourself in the place of the others, making time to learn what is needed and to provide it: if I lived in a remote land facing drought, had no family, my health limited my abilities, etc. 2. in spiritual things a. Mt. 18:15 if someone sins against me personally, I go to them interested in doing good b. when the church notes those who do not obey God, my duty is not to keep company—not even to eat (1 Cor. 5:11), that you keep away from every brother who leads an unruly life (2 Thess. 3:6, NASB) c. considering the interests and needs of others (Phil. 2:4) i. if you are not a new Christian, what are the needs of new Christians that are not met by assembling? ii. if you are a new Christian, what are the needs of older Christians? iii. a constant question needs to be on my mind, your mind: who needs to be built up? what can I do?
