ELECTROLYTES Substances that when dissolved in water will conduct electricity Ions must be in the solution for a current to be able to flow. The more ions present, the stronger the electrolyte
2
ELECTROLYTIC SOLUTIONS
- substance that conducts an electric current when dissolved in water Electrolytic Electrolyte Only acids, bases and salts are electrolytes acids bases salts
3
NON - ELECTROLYTIC SOLUTIONS
- substance that does not conduct an electric current when dissolved in water Alcohols 100% pure water 2 non-metal Compounds (covalently bonded)
4
Important Facts Facts All acids, bases and salts are electrolytes
The fewer the ions present in a compound the weaker the electrolyte The stronger the acid or base the better the electrolyte
5
EXAMPLE #1 Which of the following are electrolytes? 1. NO2 2. CH3OH
3. KOH 4. H2CO3 5. C2H6 6. CF4 7. CO2 8. HF
6
EXAMPLE #2 Which of the following are not electrolytes? 1. CO2 2. SF6
3. NaOH 4. NH4OH 5. C3H8 6. C2H5(OH) 7. H20 (distilled)
7
KEY POINTS Electrolytic solutions- conduct electricity (acids, bases and salts) Non-electrolytic solutions – do not conduct electricity (100% pure distilled water, pure alcohols, 2 non-metal compounds)
