BELL WORK Come up with an example in your life of how the scientific method was used or could be used.
2
AGENDA: Bell Work HW Check Scientific Method Lecture
(cont. from last class) III. Identifying Variables IV. HW – Identifying Variables REMINDER: LAB NEXT CLASS – Make sure you have shoes or you WILL NOT be able to participate.
3
Learning Targets: Today’s Class
With a person next to you, share the objectives for today! I can come up with every day examples of using the scientific method. Today’s Class I can explain and describe the variables of an experiment (independent and dependent). I can identify variables (independent and dependent) in any given situation.
4
SCIENTIFIC METHOD:
5
SCIENTIFIC METHOD HW: In your group, use the white board to answer the following questions based on everyone’s homework: How would you define absorbency? How would you measure absorbency? What other factors would determine how good a paper towel is?
6
Identifying variables:
Paper Towel Experiment What is the independent variable (thing you are changing)? What is the dependent variable (thing you are measuring)? EXPERIMENT Variable (Things that can change) Independent (thing that you change) Dependent (thing that you measure)
7
Identify the IV and DV: Students of different ages were given the same jigsaw puzzle to put together. They were timed to see how long it took to finish the puzzle.
8
Identify the IV and DV: What is being measured (dependent variable)?
What is it that they are changing (independent variable)?
9
Identify the IV and DV: An investigation was done with an electromagnetic system made from a battery and wire wrapped around a nail. Different sizes of nails were used. The number of paper clips the electromagnet could pick up was measured.
10
Identify the IV and DV: What is being measured (dependent variable)?
What is it that they are changing (independent variable)?
