Basics and History of Wood Gasification
And its Possibilities For YUKON Hello everyone…..thank you for the opportunity to present to you my ideas how gasification could work in the Yukon. If you have questions to this presentation please take notes and I will be available during the question period or during brakes for answers. W. Rhein

Because this is creating a very flexible fuel
Wood Gasification is the Solution for Yukon to become energy self sustainable and CO2 neutral Because this is creating a very flexible fuel That can be used In Engines with Generators to create electricity To heat buildings with boilers or furnaces To drive vehicles For cooking Read out W. Rhein

Wood Gasification is not a new technology
Did you know that over one million vehicles in Europe used onboard gasifiers during WWII? It was necessary to make fuel from wood or coal, when gasoline and diesel were either rationed or outright unavailable? There where also quite a few vehicles in North America operating with onboard gasifiers and the technology is coming back now again. Read out W. Rhein
4
As a kid I saw quite a few of these vehicles running, also trucks and farm tractors. Look at the car in front of the taxy it looks like an late 1950 or early 1960 model. W. Rhein
5
This is a simple diagram of the most used gasifier in Europe from the early 1900 until the late 1950th. Then the Fossil Fuel Industry put an end to it. Today, forward thinking people build gasifiers that integrate all we have learned from these historic efforts. W. Rhein
6
We must divest from Fossil Fuels This could be possible now!
Alternative renewable Energy is here to stay and will replace fossil fuels soon. We must divest from Fossil Fuels The use of the wood gasification technology could help the Yukon to become self sustainable on energy and could create a lot of local jobs. The wood gasification in combination with Wind and Solar as Hybrid systems could be installed in almost every Yukon Community. This would decentralise Yukon’s Electrical Grid, make it more reliable and bring jobs to the communities. This could be possible now! Read this text out. W. Rhein

Larger Systems can be used for electrical power production from
.5 MW to 50 MW. These systems, are readily available on the world market and produced in segments, to be easily assembled on site. The control units are installed in containers for easy transportation and installation and ready to be connected to the grid. Read out W. Rhein
8
This is now one of the latest designs witch integrates a large “Gas Storage Tank” . This has the advantage to supply gas to different users with different consumption patterns. Or the Gasifier can be shut down for a period of time and if as en example electricity would have to be produced the Generators could be started with the push of a button. W. Rhein
9
Ideally there could be several Generators on one gasifier for more flexibility in electricity production and for easy maintenance of the generators. W. Rhein
10
These gasifiers are now mass produced and installed all over the world.

Suggested price was US $350 000, in October 2015
For protection of the plant and the workers I would put this on a concrete slab and a building around it. As a relation to seize, there is a man standing on the right corner of the plant. This is a 1.2MW/h wood chip and saw dust gasification power plant in Bulgaria. Suggested price was US $ , in October 2015 including assembly and training for the crew to operate. FOB Shanghai. W. And create many local jobs!
If we would combine wood gasification with Solar and Wind as Hybrid Systems in almost every Yukon Community. We really could produce all the Energy Yukon needs without depleting the Yukon Forest And create many local jobs! Most of the fire wood used in Yukon comes from burned areas and the same could be the case for the fuel stock for gasifiers. All the slash produced by clearing road and power line right-of-ways and from “fire smarting” and new construction sites could also be used in gasifiers. Read out W. Rhein

A real solution for Yukon
The easiest and most cost effective way of replacing fossil fuels for heating, would be with electricity for; Electric Baseboard heaters Electric Furnaces Electric infloor heating Electric boilers Including Thermal Storage units, which could act like batteries. Read out loud. W. Rhein
14
In the transportation sector, Yukon burns
In the transportation sector, Yukon burns $200 Million of fossil fuels per year Electric vehicles could replace fossil fuel driven vehicles. First for local public transportation Local personal transportation Local freight distribution Read out W. Rhein
15
A Fast Charging Infrastructure
has to be build up in the communities and then along the major Highways, to complement existing gas stations. The electricity for this could come from solar, wind or wood gasification with generators attached. This could also supply electricity to local homes and businesses close by; Highway Lodges / Gas stations Mines could have their own systems like that. Read this out W. Rhein
16
Then slowly a network of gas stations was built up.
100 + years ago fossil fuels for cars and trucks were in most places only available in drug stores. Then slowly a network of gas stations was built up. Most Electric Vehicles come with home charging equipment already. Tesla has installed a charging network form the east coast to the west coast in the US and it is free of charge for Tesla owners. Electric Vehicle Manufacturers could do the same on the AK HWY Read this out W. Rhein

What we should see for the Yukon future
Hybrid systems in every community to produce electricity. That means a combination of: Solar, Wind, and Wood Gasification In some instances maybe small Hydro or Geothermal This would diversify the Grid System Make it more reliable, (Smart Grid) Decentralized Bring Jobs to the Communities And it would be much more economical then big hydro But most of all it would be GHG Neutral! Read this out W. Rhein
18
Divesting of fossil fuels to Hybrid Systems
Including Wood Gasification would provide up to 4 times as many jobs as are created by the fossil fuel industry for the same $ invested. W. Rhein
