1 Thermodynamics

2 Heat Transfer Heat Transfer is the movement of heat energy from one material to another. There are three forms of heat transfer.

3 Heat transfer by conduction
Heat transfer in solids, liquids, gases, plasma (all states of matter) Is a result of direct contact with a heat source Is a result of movement of electrons The pan is in direct contact with the heat source and allows heat to move from the coil to the pan.

4 Examples of Conduction
Cooking Electricity Melting ice in your hand

5 Heat transfer by convection
Heat transfer in fluids A fluid refers to a liquid or a gas Convection is responsible for our weather patterns Using a heater, or radiator, during the winter to warm your house is an example of convection. The air is warmed and moves throughout the house. Heat moving through water when it’s boiling is an example of convection.

6 Examples of Convection
Turning the heater on when it’s cold outside Turning the air conditioning on when it’s hot outside Convection currents in the ocean Weather

7 Heat transfer by radiation
Heat transfer due to electromagnetic waves Heat in the form of radiation comes off of things like campfires. Heat from the sun is transmitted by electromagnetic waves.

8 Examples of Radiation Solar radiation Sitting near a campfire

9 Mini Quiz Identify the three types of heat transfer in the illustration below. 2. 1. 3.

10 Create a poster Choose: convection, conduction or radiation
Create a poster that has: An example (Picture) Definition of your heat transfer type Describe example using at least 3 complete sentences and the word you chose.
