Tourism has continued to grow and diversify to become one of the fastest growing economic sectors in the world. Modern tourism is closely linked to development. Tourism has become a key driver for socio-economic progress. Today, the business volume of tourism equals or even surpasses that of oil exports, food products or automobiles. Tourism has become one of the major players in international commerce, and represents at the same time one of the main income sources for many developing countries.

Who is a Visitor or a migrant?
VISITOR: a traveller taking a trip to any destination outside his/her usual environment for any purpose other than working for a local company. They can be domestic (from the same country) or international. MIGRANT: someone moving to a place to live

Who falls under the “Other” category?
Border workers Seasonal workers, other short-term workers Diplomats Armed forces Frequent border crossers Long-term students

Types of visitors TOURIST: Someone who visits one place for more than 24 hours (overnight), but less than one year. SAME-DAY VISITORS: They visit for less than 24 hours, not technically a tourist. They may come for recreational or business purposes.

Types of Tourist Recreation/Leisure : just for fun and relaxation
Business: coming for a meeting or a convention or something else business-related Social: coming to see friends or family Education: on a field trip, or on exchange Health: going to a clinic or to have surgery Religion: going on a pilgrimage or on a mission Shopping: self-explanatory! Transit: on your way to somewhere else, on a layover Sports: to watch or participate in a sporting event Cultural: to experience the culture of a place, to go to a festival
