5. Why Study Civics?
Civics is the study of citizenship and government
Citizen - a legally recognized member of a country
Concept of the citizen originated in Greece around 590 BC and later adopted by the Romans.

Civics is the study of citizenship and government. Citizenship includes:
Being a productive member of society
Fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of a citizen
Your daily life is affected by your community,
the economy, and the government. Government
provides services and the structure for communities.

7. Ideals of the U.S. government and the American way of life:
Freedom and equality are protected by laws.
Citizens share in protecting liberties.
Citizens are guaranteed an education and equal opportunity of employment.
Citizens must respect the rights of others.
