2 Suction Dredging Introduction
Method, techniques and policies that Forest Service uses in Region 5. We do not intend that these are the only methods to use, but they have been successful for us. No written procedure, but courts have provided guidance. Following methods and policy are consistent with the courts.

3 Suction Dredge Introduction
Significant differences from bench sampling. Most efficient method to sample active stream gravel. Smaller than bench placer operations. Minimal equipment, only move and process small volume of gravel. Labor is primary cost.

4 Suction Dredge Introduction
Dredge sampling is required when the claimant is suction dredging or when mineral examiner needs to assess stream gravel values. Government must sample by dredge when the operator is suction dredging. Allow the mineral examiner to more accurately estimate mining costs and production rates.

5 Suction Dredge Introduction
Mineral examiners will have to dredge, find an objective 3rd party to dredge or monitor claimant. Sampling active stream gravel with a pan or sluice is not representative, gold will migrate down in the gravel. Each state has different regulations, policies and permits for dredging.
