5 Step Three: Internal Organ Preparation
While the body was drying, the removed organs were also washed and packed in natron, before being wrapped in linen. Mummies were buried alongside their dehydrated organs, which were stored in solid wood or stone jars. Jars were buried with the mummy to symbolically hold (keep safe) the internal organs on their journey to the afterlife.

10 What is Natron? Natron means, divine salt
Natron was used to completely dry the body during the embalming process.

11 Canopic Jars? Canopic jars were used to the contain the internal organs of the mummy. These contained the stomach, the liver, the intestines, and the lungs.

12 Sarcophagus

13 What is a Sarcophagus? Elaborate container used to store a person's mummy. Decorated with a cartouche and artistic designs and hieroglyphs.

14 What is a Cartouche? A cartouche is an oval with the name of someone important written inside it.

15 Cartouche History In the early days of ancient Egypt, a cartouche was attached to the coffins of important people. As time went on, many people hired an artist to create a cartouche for their own coffins. The ancient Egyptians believed that you had to have your name written down somewhere, so that you would not disappear when you died.
