Outline Important Documents for the SANA Situational Assessment
Need Assessment Recommendation
3
Documents for SA NAPA 2007 EPACC
Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy Vision Statement (Page 13) Regional Adaptation Plans Ministry of Health Adaptation Plan
4
Situational Analysis Informants – MoWE, MoH, DMRFSS…. MoEF???
State of Climate in Ethiopia – rainfall variability, extreme events – well discussed Climate modeling – key points are not discussed SA went on discussing directly climate induced disease- Back ground
5
Situational Analysis Climate change induced diseases
Malaria – thoroughly discussed Soil-transmitted Helminthiases (STHs) & Water Born Diseases, SA needs more discussion on the link (Climate induced) and evidence (peer reviewed literature)
6
Situational Analysis Air quality – needs more discussion and the link (Climate induced) and evidence Air pollution- Particulate Matter and Ozone (Indoor pollution) Mental Health- Displacement
7
Situational Analysis Additional points for SA
Health Policy of the country Strong leadership commitment Innovative community based health service approach Health Extension Programme (best practice) Climate induced diseases (Extreme event) Cardiovascular disease, Skin Cancer
8
Needs Assessment Should include research on
Climate Modeling (CR strategy Agr), (Water, Energy) More research and peer reviewed articles on climate induced disease Cost of adaptation for climate induced diseases Coordination – Strengthening of the CRGE units (best practices, efficient and effective )
9
Needs Assessment Develop evidence-based comprehensive early warning, preparedness, response and recovery plan. Policy interventions gov’t:- NAPA, EPACC, CRGE. Research on the implementations of these policies. M&E of these strategies and action plans On going- detailed secotoral adaptation plans (how the SANA could be an in put the on going efforts by the gov’t)
10
Recommendations Awareness for the local community, should have strong link the regional environmental and health. Indigenous knowledge of adaptation on climate change Infrastructure – adaptive capacity & climate change Capacity Development- experts and professionals on the health sector (avoid duplication of work) Collaboration - academia and mandated institutions (MoH and MoEF)
