Figure 1 Cross-talk between necrotic skin and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells leading to suppression of inflammation and induction of tissue regeneration. Release of HMGB1 from necrotic epithelial cells signals to bone marrow-derived PDGFRα+/CXCR4+ cells, leading to their migration to circulation and subsequent homing to the damaged skin through the stromal cell-derived factor 1α (SDF-1α)/CXCR4 axis. Tissue regeneration may involve mesenchymal and epithelial differentiation of bone marrow-derived stem cells in RDEB skin.
