1 Worship

2 The Westminster Shorter Catechism
Question: What is the chief end of man? Answer: Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever.

3 We worship our work We work at our play We play at our worship
The world competes for our worship Worth ship Worship We worship our work We work at our play We play at our worship

4 John 4:23–24 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

5 True worship must be: Biblical Involve the mind Engage the heart

6 Matthew 15:8–9 This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me.

7 John 12 And while he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. 4 There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? 5 For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii and given to the poor.” And they scolded her.

8 John 12 But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. 7 For you always have the poor with you, and whenever you want, you can do good for them. But you will not always have me. 8 She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand for burial. 9 And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.”

9 All true worship is in essence a matter of the heart
All true worship is in essence a matter of the heart. It is more, but it is not less… True worship is valuing God above all else… So the inner essence of worship is the response of the heart to the knowledge of the mind when the mind is rightly understanding God and the heart is rightly valuing God. ~ J. Piper

10 Romans 12:1: I appeal to you, therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable, which is your spiritual service of worship. Hebrews 13:15–16. Through him, then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.

11 “Worship is the submission of all our nature to God.
It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose — and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin.” ~ Archbishop Temple
