2 Today’s Warm-Up: Copy down the definitions below on to your chart and begin to complete it
1. Drama-a composition in verse or prose presenting a story in pantomime or dialogue, containing conflict of characters, particularly the ones who perform in front of audience on the stage 2. Tragedy-a composition that describes a series of misfortunes in the lives of the main characters that bring to them to ruin as a consequence of a tragic flaw, a weakness of character or adverse circumstances 3. Tragic Hero- a literary character who makes a judgment error that inevitably leads to his/her own destruction

3 4.Tragic Flaw-a weakness or negative character trait within a tragic hero that leads to the hero’s downfall 5. Hubris-excessive pride 6. Peripeteia-a sudden reversal of fortune or change in circumstances, especially in reference to fictional narrative or tragedy

4 7. Dramatic Irony-a plot device and form of irony in which the audience, or readers, are aware of an integral piece of the plot that the characters within the text are unware of 8. Catharsis-the purging of the emotions or relieving of emotional tensions, especially through certain kinds of art, such as tragedy or music 9. Tension-the use of various device and techniques within literature to evoke emotions such as worry, anxiety, fear, and stress on the part of both the reader and the characters 10. Conflict-a struggle between two opposing forces, usually a protagonist and an antagonist
