Nursery Curriculum Information Autumn Term 2
Dear Parents, In this leaflet you will find information about what your child is learning to do at nursery this half term and how you can support them at home. Our topic is ‘My Favourite Things’. Our role play area theme will be a toy shop. Communication Language and Literacy We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to listen to stories with attention and recall, and encourage them to join in with repeated words in the story show an interest in pictures and print in books and print in the environment link sounds to letters, naming and sounding the letters of the alphabet give meaning to marks that they see in different places and draw, write and paint recognise and write own name, e.g. using the laminated name card you were given at the start of nursery understand, ask and answer ‘why’ and ‘how’ questions use the words ‘and’ and ‘because’ to extend their spoken sentences when using talk to connect ideas and explain what is happening Mathematical Development We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to count in order to 10 and beyond using some number names accurately in play represent numbers using their fingers, marks on paper or pictures know that anything can be counted, including steps, claps or jumps recognise some numbers of personal significance, e.g. their age, and then extend to recognising 1-5 and then 1-9 compare two groups of objects, saying when they have the same number separate a group of three or four objects in different ways, beginning to recognise that the total is still the same notice simple patterns, e.g. putting objects in a colour sequence, e.g. green yellow green yellow use positional language, e.g. in-front or behind show an interest in shapes, e.g. naming them or playing with and making arrangements with them talk about why shapes are special, e.g. ‘ a square is special because it has 4 corners and 4 sides that are all the same size’ talk about the shapes of everyday objects, e.g. if something is ‘round’ or ‘tall’ Understanding of the World We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to complete a simple program on a computer or Ipad using age-appropriate computer software talk about significant events and special times in their own experience, e.g. their birthday or celebrating Eid or Diwali show an interest in different occupations and ways of life, e.g. the school nurse will be visiting the nursery to help us improve our hand washing skills and we are raising money for children in need comment and ask questions about what they see operate simple equipment, e.g. the CD player or computer, and operate mechanical toys with knobs or pulleys, or real objects such as cameras or mobile phones Expressive Arts and Design We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to tap out simple repeated rhythms sing familiar songs explore colour and how colours can be changed, e.g. finding out what happens when different colours are mixed together explore how sounds can be changed, e.g. making fast and slow noises with instruments describe the texture of things, e.g. rough, smooth or slimy construct, stack vertically and horizontally, make enclosures with different construction and non-construction toys engage in imaginative role-play based on own first-hand experiences or what they have seen adults doing, e.g. cooking in the role play area, and to build stories around toys, e.g. farm animals needing rescue using resources to create props to support their role-play

Physical Development We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to use scissors correctly and safely hold a pencil correctly between their thumb and fingers copy some letters, e.g. letters from their name attend to toileting needs most of the time themselves- please note this can be tricky for children if they are wearing belts understand good practices with regard to exercise, eating, sleeping and hygiene, e.g. washing hands before snack, after toilet and after playing outside move with confidence in a range of ways, e.g. travel with skill around, under, over and through balancing and climbing equipment put their coat on with some help, e.g. put arms into open-fronted coat when held up and also pull up own trousers and zipper once it is fastened at the bottom Personal Social and Emotional Development We are teaching children to/ Please encourage your child to select and use a wide range of activities and resources be aware of their own feelings, and know that some actions and words can hurt others’ feelings take turns and share resources, sometimes with support from others tolerate delay when needs are not immediately met, and understand wishes may not always be met initiate play with other adults and children, offering cues to peers to join them keep play going by responding to what others are saying or doing be confident about asking adults for help and speaking to others about own needs, wants, interests and opinions follow the nursery rules and routine and demonstrate friendly behaviour, e.g. initiating conversations, turn taking and sharing If your child does any of these activities please write it in their WOW book, or take a photograph and stick it in!! ***WOW books are collected on Tuesdays and returned on Fridays***
