The year is 1799, and you are a poor citizen of France. The nation is getting out of hand with chaos! 40,000 people have died in the Reign of Terror, largely from a new killing machine called the Guillotine. The former King, Louis XVI, has had his head chopped off and there is no leadership in the crazy country. Maximilien Robespierre, the guy who was supposed to be in charge, has also been put to death by the guillotine. Nobody can afford bread, and nobody knows who’s in charge! Suddenly, a guy comes along and says, “I can fix our problems and bring order to the situation. Follow me, and I will save France!” Would you, a poor, tired citizen of France, listen to him? Why or why not?

Just for Fun Supposedly, when Napoleon was exiled, he uttered the sentence “Able was I ere I saw Elba.” This is a palindrome. It reads the same forwards or backwards. What other palindromes can you list?
