LXRs regulate diverse aspects of macrophage biology. LXR α and β bind oxysterol metabolites and upregulate the ATP binding cassette protein A1 (ABCA1), promoting cholesterol efflux. Both activated receptor isoforms also suppress NF-κB signaling, which may be initiated by Toll-like receptors (TLRs), mitigating inflammation. Uniquely, LXRα induces expression of SPα/API6, a scavenger receptor that inhibits macrophage apoptosis and promotes the killing of Listeria. Cell  , DOI: ( /j.cell )
