Stages of Pregnancy and Fetus Development
Target: I will be able to identify the stages of fetal development during each trimester of pregnancy Stages of Pregnancy: 1st Trimester: First 3 months after conception Month 1: Very few noticeable changes occur in the mother’s body Pg. 29
4
Month 2: Pregnancy symptoms increase: including frequent urination, morning sickness, breast tenderness, fatigue, heartburn, and about 2 pounds weight gain Month 3: Pregnancy symptoms worsen; typically nausea and acne. Miscarriages happen (about 15%): Miscarriage is the loss of pregnancy before 20 weeks
5
2nd Trimester: Months 4-6 of pregnancy
Physical changes in the mother become more visible including breast enlargement as milk glands increase and increased waistline as the uterus grows times the original size.
6
Month 5- Movement of the fetus can be felt by the mother
Some women have Braxton-Hicks contractions. This is the uterus’s way of practicing for labor and delivery.
7
3rd Trimester: Months 7-9 of pregnancy
Back pain, feet and legs swelling is common The uterus has expanded from the pelvis to the bottom of the rib cage Regular strong fetal movement can be felt Fetus Moving in Belly
8
The cervix begins to open (dilate)

Stages of Fetus Development:
1st Trimester: End of 1st month: the embryo has a heartbeat, brain, and spinal cord End of 2nd month: The embryo looks human, and begins to form arms, fingers, legs, toes, and ears
10
End of 3rd month: the fetus is about 3 inches long, weighs 1 ounce, begins moving, making urine, and has all 4 heart chambers
11
2nd Trimester: The fetus can be visibly identified as male or female around 20 weeks
12
End of 4th month: fingernails, toenails, eyebrows, and eyelashes have grown.
Teeth, taste buds, and lips appear, hair grows, and hundreds of thousands of eggs form in the ovaries in female fetuses. The fetus can bend it’s arms and make a fist
13
5th month: the heartbeat can be detected with a stethoscope
End of 6th month: the fetus is about 1 foot long and weighs 1 pound Ultrasound at 20 Weeks
14
3rd Trimester: The greatest amount of growth occurs as the fetus gains most of its weight
15
Month 7: Eyelids unfuse (open)
Month 8: Most babies turn head down by this time in preparation for birth
16
Embryonic Development Time Lapse
Month 9: A full term baby is usually inches long and weighs between 6 and 9 pounds Embryonic Development Time Lapse Summary:

How Babies Grow Divide your page into 3 sections (like a peace sign)
Label the sections: Trimester 1, Trimester 2 and Trimester 3 In each stage, draw the features that develop in the fetu You may need to divide each section into multiple sections to show specific changes during specific months. *Use a minimum of 4 colors. Pg. 28
