Vocabulary for Dark Ages
Feudalism – a social and political system where different social classes would exchange service for protection. Manor – a large area of land granted to a feudal lord; or the large home on the large area of land. Many serfs would work on the manor. Chivalry – the system of values (such as loyalty and honor) that knights in the Middle Ages were expected to follow. Pope – head of the Catholic Church Papacy – the office or position of the pope; the time when a particular pope is in power. This is Pope Francis’ papacy. We will study the rocky relationship between the papacy and European kings. Monarchy – a type of government ruled by a king or queen (the monarch) Medieval – relating to the Middle Ages

relating to politics or government. His had to make many political decisions. Clergy – people (such as priests) who are the leaders of a religion or who perform religious ceremonies. Aesthetic – relating to art or beauty The play was an aesthetic success; but the acting was terrible. Vassal – someone who received protection and land from the lord in return for loyalty and service Serf – a person in the low social class that worked land owned by someone else; a peasant lord – someone having power or authority over others monastery – - a religious community where monks (men) or nuns (women) lived Catholic – - universal; general
