Use existing instruments or adapt from them

Use the same number of points on the rating scale (e.g., 1-5, odd numbers preferred)
Use multiple items on the same concept
Meanings of the scale stay consistent
Word questions negatively (don’t forget to recode the scales)
collect demographic data at the end (unless those are screening questions).
