3 The New York Times defined 2012 as the ‘year of the MOOC’.
WHEN did we start? 2008 2011 2012 2013 2015 2016 The term MOOC was coined for a class offered by George Siemens and Stephen Downes in Canada. MOOCs started to be run by a variety of universities, especially in North America. The first Stanford MOOC took off and enrolled almost a quarter of a million participants. The ‘modern MOOC movement’ started. The New York Times defined 2012 as the ‘year of the MOOC’. A number of the world’s leading higher education and development organisations such as the World Bank started examining MOOCs and their impact on development. ITCILO launched its first MOOC on CF4Dev with over 800 participants enrolled. MOOCs snapshot: 500+ Universities, courses, 35 million students enrolled.
