4 What is compelling? A compelling claim should:
Review What is compelling? A compelling claim should: Persuade interest, bring attention, or admiration in a powerfully irresistible way It should bring forward emotions, feelings, responses, consideration Compelling evidence should be: Convincing and exciting, not able to be resisted; overwhelming. Focus on quality of your evidence, not quantity How do you choose evidence? Is the evidence aligned with the claim? How do you explain the evidence with reasoning What is reasoning? Reasoning is a logical, thoughtful way of thinking. When your teacher explains the reasoning behind his classroom rules, he makes it clear exactly why and how he came up with them. What are examples of related outside information? (see model paragraph)

5 compelling claim, evidence, reasoning, related outside Information
Model Paragraph The Civil Rights movement would not have been effective without the use of nonviolent forms of resistance. Rosa Parks helped to end legal segregation by intentionally refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama (Doc1) Rosa Parks inspired tens of thousands of black citizens to boycott the Montgomery city buses for over a year. During that period she served as a messenger to coordinate rides for protesters and was indicted, along with King and over 80 others, for participation in the boycott.Through her nonviolent actions and arrest, she began the movement to integrate city buses in Montgomery. A few years later, MLK Jr. organized the March on Washington. During this event he delivered his memorable “I Have a Dream” speech which attracted over 250,000 people. The march was successful in pressuring president John F. Kennedy to initiate a strong federal civil rights bill in Congress. (insert closing sentence---one that also brings emotion) Review Brings attention Evidence followed with reason Related outside evidence with explanation

6 Scholar Criteria for Success Checklist
3 Body Paragraphs MUST Individually Include: Compelling Claim (1 social, 1 Political, 1 Economic = 3 total)---this is not from the document---it is your argument about the change in American society during Reconstruction Evidence from at least 1 document that SUPPORTS the claim you made (Total documents accurately used and cited = 3) (1 Social, 1 Political, 1 Economic) Reasoning in each paragraph---it clearly explains how the evidence you selected supports your claim---this is analysis---It explains a deeper meaning---It is not just a re-statement of the evidence Related/Relevant Outside Information in each paragraph---it is not found in the document (this is your knowledge of the time period that supports your claim and evidence)
