3
Why Quantitative Reasoning + College Writing I
Both emphasize critical thinking and communication Goal Develop student’s ability to identify real life situations where mathematical approaches can be effectively communicated to a relevant audience
4
What the classes look like
Quantitative Reasoning communicate mathematical outcomes and processes in a coherent and understandable way Rewrite ambiguous text, in a more precise/clear form Make inferences that may not be immediately obvious College Writing I Cognitive component Present reasoning spatially for the student Assess writing by checking for logical errors and unintended computational errors with data Writing also slows down the process, allowing a chance to reflect
5
What the classes look like
Quantitative Reasoning College Writing I Work in groups on mathematical projects related to major that require sustained thinking Communicate the solution process and interpret results in a sustained piece of writing Students will: Use specific critical thinking and analytical skills developed in their writing course, to reflect and communication ways to frame and reason about situations relevant to their majors in a productive quantitative way
6
3 majors at the Kent Campus Non-Stem or Statistics pathway majors
Who is participating 3 majors at the Kent Campus Non-Stem or Statistics pathway majors Exploratory Hospitality Management Music
7
How are we recruiting students?
Kent Campus students No prior math or English credit ENG ACT or SAT Writing and Language Math ACT or SAT Mathematics Subscore ALEKS Math score of 30+
8
What does it look like together?
2 sections of ENG (College Writing I) with 19 students 1 section of MATH (ST: Quantitative Reasoning) with 38 students. Scheduled back to back on a student’s schedule Course Day Time ENG 11011 T R 7:45am-9:00am MATH 20095 9:55am-11:30am 12:30pm-1:45pm
