2. What is Socratic Seminar?
Formal discussion based on a text
Open ended questions
Students listen closely to others
Students think critically for themselves
Students articulate (clearly speak) their thoughts in a professional and intelligent manner

3. Why do we do Socratic seminars?
The Common Core State Standards expects you to listen and speak professionally and gain deeper knowledge from others’ opinions
It prepares us for college and the work place:
Discussions in college or offices
Interviews
Speaking/communicating with co-workers, bosses, etc.
It teaches you how to intelligently defend your stance and possibly reevaluate your original opinion after listening to others

4. How do I actively and properly engage in Socratic Seminar?
Look at the person who is talking
Lean in and use body language to show that I am listening
Listen attentively
Take notes

5. How do I articulate myself in Socratic Seminars?
“I believe that…”
“Based on what I read, I think that…”
“I agree with ____________ because _______________.”
“___________ brings up a good point, but I disagree because ___________________.”

6. How do I get points for Socratic Seminar?
By participating (taking notes, actively listening, leaning in, speaking)
By speaking professionally and in a mature fashion
By being polite and courteous while staying on topic
