1 Solve each equation Solve each equation. x2 – 16 = 0 2. 6n2 + 24 = 0
3. 4y2 – 324 = 0

2 Lesson Objective Students will be able to solve for missing sides of a right triangle by using the Pythagorean Theorem.

3 Parts of a Right Triangle
Hypotenuse Leg Leg Legs: the two sides of a right triangle that form the right angle. Hypotenuse: the longest side of a right triangle, the side opposite the right angle.

4 List the values for the sides
List the values for the sides for each right triangle. 1. 10 8 6 Hypotenuse = _____ Leg = _____ 2. 25 24 7 Hypotenuse = _____ Leg = _____

5 Pythagorean Theorem a2 + b2 = c2
Pythagorean Theorem: In a right triangle, the sum of the squares of the lengths of the legs is equal to the square of the length of the hypotenuse. Pythagorean Theorem c 8 a 21 b a2 + b2 = c2 Find the missing side. Round to the nearest hundredth.

6 Find the missing side Find the missing side. Round to the nearest hundredth. 1. 14 17 2. 24 18

7 Find the missing side. Round to the nearest tenth.
1. 6 12 2. 16 28

8 How far is the drone? Task: How far is the Drone.
1. Split up students into groups of 3-4 students. 2. Pass out the Pythagorean Theorem Worksheet. 3. One student from each group will fly their drone to a height and distance from the take off position. The group is then to record the altitude and horizontal distance the drone is from the starting position. 4. The next student in the group flies the drone to where they want to go. Again record the altitude and horizontal distance the drone is from the starting position.

9 How far is the drone slide 2
Task: How far is the Drone. 5. Repeat until all data is complete for the worksheet. 6. Return to class and calculate the distance from the take off point of the drones position for each situation on the worksheet. 7. Pick one of the problems and describe the steps involved in how to solve that particular problem.
