1 Northwest Laurens Elementary Title I Spring Meeting April 17, 2018

2 What is a Title I School? A school that receives funding from the U.S. Department of Education to meet the needs of at-risk and low-income students.

3 What is the purpose of Title I ?
“…to ensure that all children have a fair, equal and significant opportunity to obtain a high quality education and reach, at minimum, proficiency on challenging state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.” --U.S. Dept. of Education

4 How is a school identified as being Title I?
Large concentration of low income students Based on free and reduced lunch numbers Minimum of 35% of students must be eligible for free or reduced lunch. NWLE currently has about 54% of students receiving free or reduced lunch.

5 What are the requirements that NWLE must meet to remain Title I?
Minimum of 35% of students must be eligible for free or reduced lunch Complete a schoolwide plan that is based on an annual Comprehensive Needs Assessment Create a school-parent compact that encourages a united effort to help NWLE students be successful academically Create a Family Engagement Plan based on the results of the needs assessment

6 Parent Input from Parent Involvement Survey
Surveys were available to complete online. Paper copies were sent home to all who requested one, including Spanish versions, if needed. About 113 parents completed the survey.

7 54% of parents have not attended the school’s Annual Title I Parent Meeting.
Only 27% of parents have provided input in the school’s Improvement Plan.

8 77% of parents help their child(ren) with homework every single night.
Parents feel that the school works hard to create a friendly school climate. Parents feel they are well-informed about school activities and their child’s progress. 77% of parents help their child(ren) with homework every single night. Parents feel their input is valued.

9 School Meetings About 30% of parents responded they would rather attend meetings held in the afternoon or evening. About 53% of parents responded they would like access to information online.

10 Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE)
The performance standards provide clear expectations for instruction, assessment, and student work.

Interventionists Instructional Coach Family Engagement (especially academic items that can be used to help your child at home) Balance spent on things such as the following: agendas, Reading Connection monthly newsletter, and technology

16 What is a School-Parent Compact?
An agreement that parents, students, and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all our students reach grade-level standards. » Links to goals of the school improvement plan » Focuses on student learning skills » Describes how teachers will help students develop those skills using high-quality instruction » Shares strategies parents can use at home » Explains how teachers and parents will communicate about student progress » Describes opportunities for parents to be involved Send home at the beginning of each school year Grade level specific Signatures required by all parties involved Posted on NWLE homepage
