Process of Cell Division
10.2 Process of Cell Division
2
Chromosomes Made of DNA and proteins
Prokaryotes – single circle of DNA Eukaryotes – DNA is wrapped around histone proteins to protect it and make it fit in nucleus = chromatin Chromatin condenses into chromosome shape before cell division
4
When chromosomes copy, each new copy is a chromatid (or sister chromatid)
Sister chromatids are held together at the centromere by a kinetochore protein
5
Cell Cycle Prokaryotes Cell grows Copies DNA
Membrane pinches in between 2 copies of DNA 2 new genetically identical cells formed = binary fission
7
Eukaryotes more complex 4 (5) phases; length of phase depends on type of cell
8
G1 phase – S phase – G2 phase – M phase – * Mitosis – * Cytokinesis -
9
G0 phase – when cell exits cycle and lives its life
