A canal that leads to the eardrum and the middle ear – sound enters ear here

3 Temporal Bone Styloid process Sharp, needlelike projection
Inferior to external auditory meatus Used as attachment point for neck muscles

4 Temporal Bone Zygomatic process
Thin bridge of bone that joins with zygomatic bone

5 Temporal Bone Mastoid process
Projection posterior and inferior to external auditory meatus Attachment site for some muscles of the neck

6 Temporal Bone Jugular foramen
At junction of occipital and frontal bone Allows passage of jugular vein (largest vein of the head)

7 Occipital Bone Occipital condyles
Lateral to foramen magnum on each side First vertebra rest on these

8 Maxilla/Mandible Alveolar margin
Region of upper jaw where teeth are carried

9 Mandible Condylar process
Forms temporomandibular joint with temporal bone
