2 substantiate (v): to verify, confirm, provide evidence for
John tried to substantiate his claim that his dog had eaten his homework by bringing in this x-ray. It didn’t work.

3 transient (adj): temporary, short lived
Sunsets are transient by nature, which is part of what gives them their special appeal.

4 vindicate (v): clear from blame or suspicion
After a trial that dragged on for two years, Kaleb Noggle was finally vindicated and allowed to go free.

5 wary (adj): careful, cautious
Bambi’s mom was wary of entering the clearing, and sniffed cautiously at the wind before walking out.

6 reverence (n): worship, profound respect
Graveyards often inspire a quiet reverence in people who visit.

7 prosaic (adj): relating to prose, dull, commonplace
Melinda’s plans for this summer are rather prosaic, compared with her African safari of last year.

8 anecdote (n): short, usually funny account of an event
Michael was always a hit at corporate meetings, when he shared hilarious anecdotes of office hijinks.

9 adulation (n): high praise
The adulation which was heaped upon the stars and makers of The Lord of the Ring series was intense.

10 capitulate (v): surrender

11 pragmatic (adj): practical
The professor’s overly pragmatic approach to teaching had a rather soporific effect on the students.
