Transformation Gradual transformation from already existing political units (kingdoms, empires, etc) Booming population, Holy Wars, break up of Holy Roman and Mongol Empires Treaty of Westphalia in Europe signaled this transformation in Europe territorial leaders all wanted independence & had standing armies and gov’ts

Unification Independent political units unify (join) in agreement to be one state Germany

Secession Secession or break up of political units into one or more states Ottoman Empire, Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sudan

Territory is unified through economic & military means (common currency, army) In order to control territories & make sure they comply, institutions are put in place to: Provide internal order & deal w/disputes (police & courts) Provide external security (armed forces and diplomatic services) Get resources (taxes) Improve communication & transportation (roads and bridges) State Formation

Nation Building Nation Building
Creating feelings of common identity & loyalty to a new political system Acceptance of a common culture, common history & common fate regardless of economic & social differences Common language, resolution of religious differences, military recruitment, mandatory public education Creation of national symbols like flag, national anthem & national heroes Use of national public education! Nation Building

Mass Democracy Mass Democracies
Citizens win the right to participate in governmental decision making Political parties formed to link citizens to elites in gov’t Acceptance of opposition parties Government is made legitimate by mass participation & elections

Welfare State Welfare States
“Democracies that accept responsibility for the well- being of their citizens by redistributing resources and providing services for the young, old, sick, disabled and unemployed.” Transfer of resources from elite to less fortunate Welfare State
