1 How to help your child to be a confident reader.
Welcome – thank you to everyone who has turned up this afternoon. We believe that teaching children to read is a partnership between school and home. Having parents who support their children to learn to read is crucial to their success as readers. Reading is vital – it opens new worlds to children and it is crucial for children to be successful at secondary school and to gain jobs when they leave school. The world is changing and becoming faster paced – to get jobs children need to have GCSEs in English and Maths. School can teach children how to read and parents can help their children to practice these skills and develop a love of books. My own experience – memories of going to the library during summer holidays, reading in the launderette whilst waiting for the washing to be done and the pleasure of delving into new worlds. No one is born a good or bad reader.

2 We decided to take on board a new approach this year as reading is so important.
It is called Read, Write, Inc and is a well known programme used across the country to improve children’s confidence with reading. There are two parts to the programme, Read, Write Inc for children in R to Yr2 and children who are not yet fluent readers in years 3 and 4. Fresh Start is a similar programme used for children in Years 5 and 6 who are not yet fluent.

3 What does a lesson look like?
Speedy sounds Green words Red words Alien words Fred fingers spelling Books - read with partner Demo with easy sounds Tell the parents that this is not a test Aiden and Ryley

4 Two letters one sound rhymes
Go through our speed sounds poster – copy in packs. Show ‘special friends’ – sounds – can they spot them? Teach why it is so vital – sound out shop as s h o p and then sh o p rhymes

5 Alien words The Year 1 phonics test – in June 2017.
When we first see print on a page – it all looks alien then we start to recognise words – there will always be new words to tackle. Children are expected to read alien or nonsense words as well as real words to check that they have the techniques to tackle unknown words. Show how we would teach alien words – special friends? Fred in your head. Read Demo with Claire then with parents.

6 floccinaucinihilipilification
This is a real word – to read it I need to break it down into sounds – I need to know that tion is special friends – that cc is one sound. Meaning - the estimation of something as worthless

7 Teaching spelling – Fred fingers
Show them how we would write a simple sentence ‘The cat was thin.’ Model tell sentence and then spot special friends.
