What is Central Idea? The point or idea the author is trying to express to the reader/audience - also called the main idea What the story is about The thesis statement in non-fiction Always a phrase or statement

Central Idea In any writing - fiction or nonfiction - there can be more than one central idea Each central idea will have its own supporting evidence - details - in the text

Supporting Evidence Can be a direct quote (what we call text evidence)
Can be a paraphrase (a summary in a few sentences - using your own words) of a paragraph or a chapter

TIP It is always wise to pay attention to the following for clues about the central idea - and if it has changed: The title Sub-headings The first sentence of a paragraph or chapter The last sentence of a paragraph or chapter

TIP:WIN Strategy W: Who or what is the text mostly about?
I: What is the most important information about this who or what? N: Phrase or sentence with a small number of words
