1 LTSS Lesson 8 Special Relationships
Title Page

2 What variables can you see? What do the pictures have in common?
What good words can we use here? One work sheet per group of three, set out on the tables so that the learners can begin when they arrive. They will be able to identify context specific variables but hopefully one group with relate the generic terms in the title to their context specific variables. Spotting the fulcrum, (turning point is difficult for the bottle opener). You may need to demonstrate this.

3 Using Levers What is going on here?
Groups of 3 maximum. The groups discuss their prediction. One group carries out the experiment to determine the result.

4 Experimenting with Levers
Look at the questions below. Use them to help you talk about something you found tricky today. What were the variables? How many different ways can you say what is going on? How do the numbers help? What about the graph? Why do we use levers? Activity 1. Groups of 3 maximum. A student in each group draws a two column table with the headings Variables and Values to record their answers.

5 Using Your Thinking There are two word cards for you to look at.
They will help you think more about this relationship. You don’t have to answer all of the questions. Pick one question that you want to talk about.

6 Activity 2: Groups of 3 maximum. Answer the questions.

7 What is the relationship between the load and effort?
Activity 2. Groups of 3 maximum. Answer the questions.

9 Archimedes once said: “If you give me a place to stand I can move the earth.” What did he understand about levers? Revisit the hook to explore the differences between the classifications today with last lesson. Also link back to your hook in lesson 6.
