Monday 5/15/17 Fill out your assignment notebook for the week
Notebook Entry: We refer to our sun and the objects moving around it as the solar system. Remember that a system is something with parts that work together. Do you think the parts of the solar system can be made of different materials? Why or why not?

Solar System A solar system is a star and all of the objects that travel around it — planets, moons, asteroids, comets and meteoroids. Most stars host their own planets, so there are likely tens of billions of other solar systems in the Milky Way galaxy alone. An artist's drawing shows the Fermi satellite orbiting Earth. How can we study our solar system?
Many different ways to look at our solar system. These different ways are called scale properties. What is this? The word scale has multiple definitions: Scale can be a device to weigh objects Can cover a fish or a butterfly We scale a wall by climbing Refer to measurement scales such as pH, temperature, or Richter
4
Scale Properties In science, when we talk about scale we are referring to the properties of an object that can change as size is increased or decreased. Mass Current Geologic Time Voltage Brightness Architectural Map scales Decibel scales Microscopic Nano Temperature Light years
5
The Big Question When we look at the objects in our solar system through different lenses what patterns do we see? The different lenses are the different scale properties.

Process for our Work Individual/group work to collect data
Analyze data in groups to identify patterns Mix with classmates from other groups to share your analysis of the data and what patterns you identified. Use these patterns to place fictitious planets into the appropriate place within our solar system!
8
Collect Data You will collect data on a few of the scale properties.
You will start by using your textbook to gather information, then go to NASA resources for additional research. You must show me what you have found in the textbook before you can use a Chromebook for additional research. NASA resources are linked on my webpage
