Scientific notation is used to express very large or very small numbers.
A number in scientific notation is written as the product of a number (decimal) and a power of 10.
The number has one digit to the left of the decimal point. The power of ten indicates how many places the decimal point was moved.

4. Scientific Notation
If the exponent is positive, move the decimal to the right the number of spaces indicated.
If the exponent is negative, move the decimal to the left the number of spaces indicated.

5. Scientific Notation
To write Scientific notation, you write the decimal number (77 becomes 7.7) times 10 to the correct power.
Example= becomes 3.4 x 10 4
