2 Figure 1 Activation of LXR Kills GBM Cells by Depleting Cholesterol
The authors demonstrate that GBM cells are incapable of de novo synthesis of cholesterol and instead are dependent on cholesterol import for survival. Activation of the Liver X Receptor (LXR) by a synthetic agonist (LXR-623) increases transcription of ABCA1, a major exporter of cholesterol-containing lipoproteins. LXR-623 treatment also limits cholesterol uptake by decreasing levels of the cholesterol import protein LDLR. Together, these effects lead to a dramatic drop in intracellular cholesterol supply, driving cell death. Cancer Cell  , DOI: ( /j.ccell ) Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions
