1 Elements and Compounds

2 Pure substances Made up of either single atoms or atoms chemically bonded to other atoms (molecules)

3 Molecule Molecules are two or more atoms that are chemically combined (bonded). They can be made up of the same type of atom or different atoms Examples: Molecule made from more than one type of atom Molecule made from one type of atom

4 Element A pure substance made up of one type of atom that cannot be broken down into any other substance Each element can be identified by the type of atom it is made of Listed on the periodic table Examples: Gold, Carbon, Iron

5 Compound Two or more different atoms that have been chemically combined When different atoms combine to form a compound, the properties are different than the properties of the atoms/elements that make it up. Example: Chlorine is a yellow, toxic gas. Sodium is a soft, reactive metal. Sodium chloride is a crystalline solid.

6 Title: Elements and Compounds
For each item: Sketch it Determine if it is an element or compound Rationale – why is it an element/compound?

7 After you complete the chart:
What do all of the items have in common? Are there other ways to group the items? What are the main differences between elements and compounds?
