1. My Social Action Hero.

2. Introduction
I have chosen my sister Shauna Rooney as my social action hero.
Currently Shauna works in Corn Fields Care Centre as the sister of the
Nightingale Suite which specializes in caring for residents who have
Alzheimer’s and Dementia.
Shauna is just 24 and she has achieved amazing things in her career so far.

3. Shauna Rooney
Shauna is a hero because on a day to day basis she cares for people with Dementia and Alzheimer's insuring that they have high levels of well being
and a good quality of life.​
Through her work Shauna leads by example and wants to show people that just because someone has a diagnosis of Dementia it does not mean they can not live their life to the full.
Shauna believes we should look beyond a persons diagnosis of dementia and see them for the person that they are taking into account their life history.
In her dementia care unit Shauna encourages staff to get information about residents such as where they worked, who were they married to or where they lived. Even the little things such as if they take sugar in their tea or what their favorite foods are matter. .

5. Why is she a hero ?
In the care home Shauna is approached regularly by staff and relatives of the patients and she is more than happy to help out with anything she can. Shauna really does go above and beyond for the people she works with.
Since she earned her nursing degree in 2012 Shauna has received two care and kindness awards after patients relatives nominated her.
Shauna is a friendly face in the care home and everyone in the care home feels that they can approach her and talk to her about anything.
Even when she isn’t working Shauna is always thinking about new activities that she could do with patients. In her last home she made various displays for residents to enjoy and this allowed residents to remember how life before they had dementia.

When Shauna was offered the role of staff nurse in Rush Hall Care Home she was unsure about working in a Care Home environment however as she progressed in the job she learned that she loved this area of nursing.
Since then Shauna has went on to be Sister of the Nightingale suite in Cornfields Care Centre.
Shauna is extremely dedicated to her job and its clear that she loves and thoroughly enjoys her work.

8. Nursing Standard Awards 2015
In February of 2015 Shauna received an from the Nursing Standard Awards informing her that she had been nominated for the infection prevention nurse of the year award.
Previous to this Shauna had raised hand washing compliance and reduced out breaks by 100%. Truly something as amazing as this deserved some recognition and this lead to Shauna's nomination.
The awards took place in May 2015 in the famous Savoy hotel in London.
With fellow nursing colleagues by her side on the night Shauna won the award and in my opinion done more than enough to deserve it. It was really at this point when I realized that my own sister was a true inspiration.
