1
CELL THEORY And how we got there!
2
The first guy to see cells
Robert Hooke 1663 adapted a simple microscope observed cork cells
3
Hooke’s first drawing of cells
He thought the cork looked like tiny rooms that monks lived in and so named them “cells”.
4
1st to describe bacteria.
Anton van Leeuwenhoek Dutch businessman and amateur scientist made a simple microscope. Looked at pond water and scrapings from teeth. “Animacules” timeline
5
-all plants made of cells.
Development of the cell theory: Matthias Schleiden –1838. -all plants made of cells. Theodore Schwann – 1839 -all animals made of cells Rudolf Virchow – – all cells come from other cells.

Cell Theory All living things are composed of one or more cells.
Cells are organisms' basic units of structure and function. Cells come only from existing cells
14
Compound Microscopes The lenses magnify an object by bending light through convex lenses Magnification – enlarged size of the image. Resolution – sharpness of image.
15
New technology Today we have scanning tunneling microscopes that can see individual molecules STM image, 7 nm x 7 nm, of a single zig-zag chain of Cs atoms (red) on the GaAs(110) surface (blue).
16
These tiny glass capsules contain a liquid scent and are glued onto paper. When the paper is scratched, some of the capsules are ruptured and the scent is released.
