3
Background Only newspaper in town - Smalltown, TX
Subscription numbers declined in early 2000 due to online news aggregator services such as Google and Yahoo Implemented a website in early 2000 to offer incentive to subscribers to retain their subscription Poorly planned website implementation did not accurately plan for growth or accurately predict the level of use of “The Web”
4
Background Continued - Poorly Designed Website
Each story was written as a static HTML webpage, creating hundreds of individual story webpages over the years Main site had to be manually updated every time a new story was added Special full time employees hired to manage the posting / updating of the site Advertisements added manually to stories and main page, bad conversion rate, declining ad sales over the years
5
Proposed Solution Content Management System (CMS)
Dynamically store all web-based content in an easy to manage database with a web-based graphical front end that anyone can use.
6
Business Needs Reporters need to be able to easily add their own stories to the website. Editors need to be able to approve stories before they are posted on the website. Advertisements need to be contextually added to stories to increase conversion rate and drive ad-sales back up. Subscribers need the option to disable ads on the site if they pay for a subscription to the paper.
7
Benefits Increased revenue from ad sales.
Increased revenue from subscriptions. Decreased salary cost. Increased efficiency adding stories to the website directly by reporters. Increased subscriber goodwill for the paper coming into the “Internet Age”.
